Education: An orientation checklist

endMenu
OH&S education and training helps to prevent injury and illness in the workplace by making sure workers know how to do their jobs in the safest and healthiest way. This education and training is an important part of an OH&S program; it also helps to improve productivity, increase profits and ensure a more competent, knowledgeable workforce.

All workers (managers, supervisors, front-line workers, OH&S committee members, WH&S representatives/designates, and contractors) should receive an OH&S orientation.

OH&S education and training should be delivered to workers on a continuous basis and should also be provided to new and returning workers, to workers who are changing job tasks, and to workers faced with potential new hazards.

A sample orientation checklist is available here.

For the purposes of PRIME Practice Incentive requirements, your orientation checklist must familiarize your workers with:
  • Your OH&S and return-to-work policy(ies)
  • Procedures for reporting accidents/incidents in your workplace
  • Procedures for conducting inspections in your workplace
  • Health and safety rules for your workplace
  • Basic rights of workers in the area of OH&S
  • Procedures for REC* hazards
  • Emergency response plan
  • SafeWork practices and procedures

*REC - recognizing, evaluating and controlling
