Student Safety Video/Radio Contest Winners
The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission encourages youth to work safe with a radio and video ad contest. Grade 7-12 students were encouraged to get creative and develop a radio or video ad in any style that tells about the importance of workplace health and safety.
The winner of the 2013 video contest is James Newhook, a Grade 8 student from Laval High School in Placentia. He receives $1,000 for an animated-style composition titled “SafeWork Man Saves the Day”. Newhook also tied for first place in the Commission’s 2012 contest.
New this year to the prize offerings was a Viewers’ Choice Award, whereby the top 10 entries were posted online, giving the general public the opportunity to vote for their favourite. The winning entry titled: “Workplace Safety” was created by Haley Edmunds-Shiwak, Jade Holwell, James Jacque and Jordan Sheppard of B.L. Morrison All-Grade in Postville. The video received over 5,000 votes - 4,000 more than the nearest competitor. The Viewer’s Choice prize is $500.
These winning videos will be aired on Rogers Television’s Out of the Fog, posted to You Tube, Facebook and the Commission’s website.
In the radio ad category, first place goes to Donald Ryan and Matthew Hynes of Belanger Memorial in Doyles for an ad titled: “Proper Training”. The first place prize is $1,000.
